The Petroleum Geology minor equips students with a wide spectrum of oil and gas exploration concepts and techniques. The program utilizes state-of-the-art software to work with subsurface well logs, 2D and 3D reflection seismic data. Students also conduct specialized fieldtrips to collect rock samples to be used for laboratory analytical techniques such as Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Thin Section Microscopy to analyze lithology, porosity and permeability of reservoir rocks. Students graduate ready to join the workforce and excel in any national or international oil and gas company.
Petroleum Geology Minor
An applicant for admission to science and science related undergraduate programs at KU must satisfy the following criteria:
- The applicant is required to take the KU aptitude test consisting of tests in Maths, English language, and/or Chemistry. KU Center for Measurement and Evaluations designs the tests in collaboration with faculty members. Within a period of 2 years prior to graduation from high school, senior students are eligible to sit the examination.
- The applicant must arrange for certification documents which are submitted to KU Registrar’s Office affirming that he/she has satisfactorily graduated from high school.
The students are admitted if they fulfill the following:
- If he/she is not on probation.
- Completed 6 courses with overall minimum grade of C. The 6 courses are: English (161), Math (101), Geology (100) or (101), Chemistry (101) not below C grade, Physics (101), and Math (102). Students must maintain a minimum of 2.0 (C grade) in both their GPA, and MPA for their graduation. Students who do not maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 will be liable for restrictions under Bi-law policies.

Training of students in projects related to petroleum geology in Kuwait by application of knowledge they gained during their studies in the Geology Program. The course is designed to introduce the fundamental of seismic exploration concepts, which form the basis of seismic data interpretation. It includes seismic methods (refraction and reflection), geophysical well logging and seismic stratigraphy. It also provides a practical knowledge of seismic data acquisition techniques, with an introduction to seismic data processing. Seismic interpretation software will be utilized during the course. Exercises will allow students to place the geophysical theory into context through a series of practical assignments.

This course emphasizes the applications of sedimentology to studies of petroleum reservoirs. Exploration for and recovery of hydrocarbons. Studies of both modern sediments and older sedimentary rocks. Studies of how sediments form in recent environments. Understanding and recognizing older sediments. Familiarization with sedimentary structures and other sedimentary features. Interpretation of processes responsible for sediment formation. Importance of porosity and permeability in reservoirs. Understanding the methods used in the exploration for and recovery of oil and gas from sedimentary reservoir rocks also form a major task in this course.

The course is structured to teach geological and geophysical software. GIS software will be used to integrate geological and geophysical data. The software programs will be teaching students data managements, well-log correlation, seismic interpretation, seismic sequence analysis, facies map preparation, structural mapping, fault identification, determination of reservoir characterization, recognition of fault-fracture patterns and modeling.
