Assistant Professor
Degrees and Certificates

2004: PhD in computational linguistics from the University of Manchester Institute of Science & Technology (UMIST).

1998: MSc in computational linguistics from the University of Manchester Institute of Science & Technology (UMIST).

1996: BA in English language and literature from Kuwait University (KU).

Key Responsibilities

I am responsible for teaching a full course load, which includes preparing lectures, grading assignments, and mentoring students. In addition to teaching, I am expected to conduct original research, publish scholarly work, and contribute to the advancement of linguistics. I also engage in administrative duties such as serving on committees, participating in departmental planning, and supporting institutional governance.

Professional Experience

Before joining Kuwait University, I worked as a bank teller at Burgan Bank (1989-1992) and a data entry clerk at the Public Authority for Civil Information (1992-1997). In my present position at KU, I teach a wide range of courses in linguistics, carry out administrative duties, attend conferences to expand my academic network, and engage in academic research.

Research Interests

My research interests have been focused on onomastics and anthroponyms for a number of years now, from both historical and contemporary perspectives. I am also interested in the language contact of Farsi and Kuwaiti Arabic. The minority groups of Kuwaiti ʕayam  'Ajam' experience a gradual shift away from their ethnic language to the use of the majority language.

Academic Subjects

I thoroughly enjoy teaching and find it highly rewarding. I teach a wide range of linguistics courses, especially technology-related ones such as Computational Linguistics, Corpus Linguistics, Language in the Digital Age, and Introduction to Translation and Technology. I deliver workshops and seminars in and outside the institution.
