The Research Sector at Kuwait University hosted Mr. Joshua Goldberg, Co-Managing Partner at Nath, Goldberg & Meyer, a leading U.S.-based law firm specializing in intellectual property and patent law.

This visit aligns with Kuwait University’s ongoing efforts to strengthen international collaboration in the field of intellectual property protection and patent registration. The firm represented by Mr. Goldberg currently oversees the registration of the University’s patents with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

During his visit, Mr. Goldberg met with Dr. Haneen Shafiq Al-Ghabra, Acting Assistant Vice President for Research – External Research Collaboration and Consulting, and Dr. Nasser Faisal Al-Tanak, Assistant Vice President for Research Analysis and Development. The meeting included discussions on strategies to enhance and streamline the University’s patent registration process, the challenges faced in this area, and potential avenues for strengthening mutual cooperation in this vital domain.

This visit reaffirms Kuwait University’s commitment to supporting innovation and scientific research, and to reinforcing its global presence by protecting and internationally registering its research outputs.

In her statement, Dr. Haneen Al-Ghabra emphasized that since its establishment, Kuwait University has continuously supported and nurtured the innovation of its researchers by encouraging creativity and excellence—contributing to the advancement of Kuwait’s economic and industrial sectors and elevating the University’s global ranking.

To support this mission, the Patent Office at Kuwait University was established on April 30, 2005, by University Decree No. (886), to undertake the legal procedures necessary to secure intellectual property rights for inventions developed by faculty, students, and staff. The office also manages the commercialization and marketing of such inventions, ensuring they generate tangible returns that support the University's service and societal contributions, as well as the broader development goals of the State of Kuwait.

Dr. Al-Ghabra also expressed her pride in the Fast Track service, which accelerates the patent registration process from three years to just one year, making it more accessible to researchers and encouraging them to submit even more innovative patents.
