As part of enhancing the role of Kuwait University students in serving the community, students from the Interior Architecture course at the College of Architecture presented projects aimed at supporting senior citizens. These projects focused on the rehabilitation of existing buildings or old homes, transforming them into clinics or health centers dedicated to meeting the health, psychological, and mobility needs of elderly individuals.
Building on this concept, the projects stood out with unique characteristics, as each student presented a distinct solution to the challenges faced by seniors in architectural spaces. The proposed solutions focused on both functional and aesthetic aspects, such as providing ramps instead of stairs, replacing slippery flooring materials with safe alternatives, and ensuring visual comfort by offering natural lighting.
Some students took special care in incorporating nature into their designs, leveraging the relationship between the building and its natural surroundings. This contributed to creating supportive therapeutic environments that enhance the comfort and well-being of users. Courtyards, open spaces, and windows overlooking nature were utilized as part of the design experience.
As part of their practical preparation, the students organized field visits to the selected buildings. These visits helped them understand the architectural context, analyze the building's structure and function, and identify the potential for its creative and effective reuse. This step also allowed them to bridge the theoretical aspects with real-world practical application.
A total of twenty-one projects were presented, all of which demonstrated high levels of creativity. The ideas and implementations varied, ranging from preserving the original building’s heritage character, blending traditional and modern elements, to offering contemporary design visions based on simplicity and clarity.
