In conjunction with World Oceans Day, held annually on June 8, the Department of Marine Sciences at the College of Science at Kuwait University organized a specialized scientific event at the Marine Sciences Center. The event brought together faculty members, researchers, students, and representatives of entities concerned with the marine environment, with the aim of raising awareness about the importance of protecting marine ecosystems and supporting their sustainability.
The Acting Dean of the College of Science, Prof. Haidar Sayed Jawad Behbehani, emphasized the importance of preparing specialized cadres in marine sciences capable of addressing environmental challenges and contributing to the achievement of sustainable development goals, praising the role of the Department of Marine Sciences in this field.
The scientific program included specialized lectures addressing topics such as pollution in Kuwait Bay, the analysis of mercury distribution in its sediments, sustainable management of local and international fisheries in the Gulf, and the use of remote sensing to protect the marine environment. The sessions concluded with a documentary screening titled “Qaruh Island,” which highlighted the island’s environmental aspects, biodiversity, and the importance of its conservation.
On the sidelines of the event, a scientific exhibition was held with the participation of the Marine Sciences Student Club and several scientific and research entities, including the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research, the Algae Cultivation Unit, the Marine Herbarium, the Coast Guard, and the Environment Public Authority. The event concluded with a panel discussion on the key marine environmental challenges in the State of Kuwait, followed by the distribution of participation certificates to attendees.
