
Kuwait University, represented by the Department of Physics at the College of Science, and in collaboration with Kuwait National Center for Space Research, organized the “Total Lunar Eclipse Observation” event on Sunday, September 7, 2025, at Sabah Al-Salem University City. The event was held under the patronage of Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences, with the participation of various state entities and organized by the student members of the Physics Club, reaffirming Kuwait University’s academic role in disseminating astronomical knowledge and providing the opportunity to observe major cosmic phenomena.
The event was attended by Prof. Haidar Behbehani, Acting Dean of the College of Science; Dr. Hala Al-Jassar, Acting Chair of the Department of Physics, College of Science, Kuwait University; Dr. Fahad Zaman, President of the Physics Club; in addition to several ambassadors of brotherly countries, deans of colleges, members of the academic staff, and a wide participation of students from across Kuwait University.
On this occasion, Prof. Haidar Behbehani, Acting Dean of the College of Science, Kuwait University, affirmed that the total lunar eclipse is a cosmic and scientific phenomenon that occurs periodically, and that the students of Kuwait University organized this significant astronomical event in an outstanding manner to raise public awareness about this phenomenon, which is a divine sign carrying warnings for humankind and requires adherence to the principles of the true Islamic faith.
Prof. Behbehani commended the remarkable cooperation between the various state institutions and Kuwait University in covering this unique event, expressing his hope that all attendees enjoyed this cosmic phenomenon, which was successfully presented through the exceptional and fruitful efforts of the students.
For her part, Sheikha Al-Bassam, Vice President of the Physics Club at Kuwait University, stated that the Physics Club played an integral role in organizing this major scientific event under the supervision of the Department of Physics at the College of Science and with the sponsorship of Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences. She noted that the club sought to engage students from various colleges at Kuwait University in observing this astronomical phenomenon in an atmosphere of enthusiasm and unity, praising the large turnout of the public and the participation of members of the academic and administrative staff from across the university.
The event also featured several scientific contests with wide participation from children and families, along with strong support and cooperation from various sponsoring and supporting entities. Monetary prizes were awarded for photography entries from participants inside and outside Kuwait, documenting this cosmic phenomenon through field telescopes in collaboration with The Scientific Center and Al-Ojeiri Center.
On the sidelines of the event, a scientific lecture on the phenomenon of the total lunar eclipse was delivered by astrophotographer Abdulrahman Al-Harbi, explaining the different stages of the eclipse.
The event concluded with the performance of Salat al-Khusuf (the Eclipse Prayer) by attendees, in a spiritual and religious atmosphere.
