Kuwait University announced that students from the Departments of Earth and Environmental Sciences and Petroleum Engineering have secured third place in the annual “Imperial Barrel Award (IBA)” competition, organized by the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, competing against nine universities from across the Middle East, including institutions from Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, Iraq, and Jordan.
The University explained that its team participated under the supervision of Dr. Mohammed Hussein Naqi and included the students Abdulrahman Al-Awadhi, Hawra Al-Nasser, Ibrahim Al-Saeedi, and Dima Al-Rashidi. The competition was held remotely this year due to prevailing circumstances, although it had originally been scheduled to take place in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.
It further noted that this achievement reflects the core pillars of Kuwait University’s strategic vision, particularly its commitment to quality through the preparation of competitive academic outcomes, innovation through the application of modern scientific and technological tools, and distinguished presence through honorable representation in regional and international forums.
The University added that the competition is considered one of the most prominent specialized scientific events for university students. Participating teams are provided with subsurface geological data from a sedimentary basin, which they analyze using advanced computer software to estimate oil and gas reserves and assess the feasibility of their extraction, before presenting their findings to a specialized judging panel.
Kuwait University also commended the continuous support provided by Kuwait Oil Company in preparing and training the team, through professional guidance and practical expertise, which contributed significantly to achieving this accomplishment.
