A team from the Department of Chemical Engineering at the College of Engineering and Petroleum, Kuwait University, participated in the Green Guardians Hackathon, organized by INJAZ Bahrain and held at the Bahrain International Exhibition & Convention Centre from 8 to 11 September 2025. The competition brought together more than 100 students from 15 Gulf universities, focusing on the quality of ideas and depth of environmental awareness.

Kuwait University team included the students: Nada Al-Sendi, Nuwayir Al-Rashidi, Dima Al-Otaibi, Dina Al-Otaibi, Noura Al-Hajri, and Amal Al-Khader, all from the Department of Chemical Engineering.

The team secured second place among 21 participating teams in the competition, which centered on developing practical and innovative solutions to address energy and environmental challenges, in pursuit of the hackathon’s main goal: achieving Net Zero Carbon.

The project presented by the team was entitled: “Kuwait’s Pathway to Net Zero Carbon”, offering a roadmap for sustainable energy in Kuwait through:

  • Integrating solar energy potential with Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).
  • Engaging the private sector through Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs).
  • Utilizing green hydrogen as an energy storage solution to ensure sustainability and supply security.

According to the proposed model, Kuwait could achieve full carbon neutrality by 2060, relying on 70% renewable energy and 20% nuclear energy, compared to the current renewable energy contribution of only 0.14%. This would position Kuwait as a regional pioneer in the transition toward clean energy.
