In Strengthening Bridges of Cooperation Between the Two Countries, Kuwait University’s Community Service and Continuing Education Center Organizes the 18th Japanese Speech Contest in Collaboration with the Embassy of Japan and Japanese Society in Kuwait

Under the patronage and in the presence of the Assistant Vice President for Academic Support Services for Community Service and Libraries, Dr. Hamed Suleiman Al-Fraiḥ, the Community Service and Continuing Education Center at Kuwait University, in cooperation with the Embassy of Japan and the Japanese Society in Kuwait, organized the 18th Japanese Speech Contest on Monday, 08 December 2025, at Sabah Al-Salem University City.
The event was attended by H.E. Mr. Mukai Kenichiro, Ambassador of Japan to the State of Kuwait, Ms. Etemad Al-Kandari, Acting Director of the Community Service and Continuing Education Center, several representatives of the Japanese Embassy, members of the Japanese community in Kuwait, and students of Kuwait University.
The contest aims to enhance the exchange of expertise and cultures through learning the Japanese language, contributing to building bridges of friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

At the outset, Dr. Hamed Suleiman Al-Fraiḥ affirmed that the contest reflects the close cooperation between the two friendly nations and underscores their shared commitment to promoting cultural exchange. He noted that the competition provides an opportunity to celebrate creativity and excellence, while encouraging students to deepen their understanding of Japanese culture and appreciate its rich heritage.

For his part, Ambassador Mukai Kenichiro expressed his gratitude to Kuwait University and the Japanese Society in Kuwait for their continued support of cultural and educational initiatives. He emphasized that language is an essential part of culture and “the key to gaining a deeper understanding of different cultures.” He added that the contest offers a platform to showcase learners’ passion for the Japanese language and to strengthen cultural exchange between the two nations. He further noted that six contestants participated this year, presenting diverse topics that highlighted the Center’s role in supporting students and encouraging cultural exchange.

Meanwhile, Ms. Etemad Al-Kandari, Acting Director of the Community Service and Continuing Education Center, stated that holding the contest for the 18th consecutive year is the result of distinguished cooperation between the Center and the Japanese Embassy. She stressed that participation is not merely a linguistic test, but a celebration of passion, dedication, and confident self-expression in a language rich in history and culture. She also extended sincere appreciation to the Japanese Embassy for its continuous support of academic and cultural activities.

The contest featured a visual presentation by the Community Service and Continuing Education Center showcasing its major achievements throughout the year and the various activities it hosted to support learning and cultural exchange.
In addition, Dr. Yutaro Oki, Associate Professor from Kyushu University’s J-MENA Office, delivered an introductory presentation on study opportunities in Japan, highlighting the strengths of the academic environment, international student programs, and prospects for academic cooperation.

On the sidelines of the event, the Kuwait Kendo and Iaido Club presented a live demonstration of Kendo—one of Japan’s oldest martial arts—displaying disciplined skills that reflect the deep traditions of the art.

The judging panel then announced the results after evaluating the six contestants based on content, fluency, comprehension, and expressive ability. The winners were:

  1. First Place: Mr. Hamad Al-Qassar
  2. Second Place: Mr. Mustafa Hasan
  3. Third Place: Mr. Hussein Asad

     

At the conclusion of the event, the Community Service and Continuing Education Center honored the Japanese Embassy, the volunteer team, and the Kuwait “Al-Taibeen” Heritage Team in appreciation of their efforts and active participation in the success of the competition. The Center also extended its thanks to all staff members from the Continuing Education Department and the Continuing Education and Training Department for their contributions to the event’s success.
