The Kuwait University Council convened its meeting (02-2026) on the morning of Tuesday, 30 June 2026, under the chairmanship of University President Prof. Dina Musaed Al-Mailem. During the meeting, the University President reaffirmed the University's commitment to advancing the implementation of its academic and administrative plans through an approach grounded in adherence to approved regulations and procedures, while strengthening the principles of institutional governance and quality. She noted that these efforts support the achievement of the University's strategic objectives, enhance its academic standing, and reinforce its national and societal mission of preparing qualified graduates and serving the community, in line with the continued support and patronage of the country's political leadership.
Prof. Al-Mailem also commended Kuwait University's progress in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2026, noting that this achievement reflects the University's collective institutional efforts and the dedication of its faculty, staff, and students across the fields of education, scientific research, and community service. She affirmed that the University would continue implementing its strategic plans, advancing the quality of its academic and research performance, and strengthening its contributions to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), thereby further enhancing its presence and standing among leading universities worldwide.
The University President also emphasized compliance with all approved University circulars, decisions, and procedures as the framework governing institutional operations. She noted that adherence to these policies ensures consistency in administrative and academic practices, strengthens institutional discipline, and reinforces the role of committees within academic departments and colleges, each operating within its respective mandate and in accordance with the University's governing laws and regulations, thereby safeguarding the integrity and consistency of institutional procedures.
Prof. Al-Mailem further stated that Kuwait University continues to enhance its educational and academic environment by supporting the University library system and strengthening its role in advancing teaching, learning, and scientific research. She also stressed the importance of adhering to the University's approved procedures for the selection and adoption of textbooks and course materials, emphasizing that the sale and purchase of approved textbooks shall be conducted exclusively through the Kuwait University Student Bookstore, further clarifying that the adoption of university textbooks falls within the responsibilities of the relevant academic department and college, compliance with these procedures and regulations is an institutional responsibility and that any violations will be addressed in accordance with the University's approved regulations and procedures.
The University is also developing a framework for reinstating an annual graduation ceremony to be held at the end of each academic year. The initiative aims to recognize graduates through ceremonies organized by each college, in a manner that reflects the stature of Kuwait University and appropriately celebrates their academic achievements.
Congratulating this year's high school graduates, Prof. Al-Mailem wished them continued success and expressed her hope that their university years will be marked by achievement, growth, and meaningful contributions. She encouraged students and their parents to take full advantage of the services and programs offered by Kuwait University in the areas of admissions, registration, academic advising, and student guidance to explore the academic programs and educational opportunities available. Doing so, she noted, will help them make informed academic decisions and choose academic pathways that align with their abilities, interests, and future aspirations.
Concluding her remarks, Prof. Al-Mailem extended her best wishes to all members of the Kuwait University community, including faculty, academic support staff, administrative staff, and students for a successful summer semester. She emphasized that students remain at the heart of the educational process and reaffirmed the University's commitment to providing the support and resources necessary to help them successfully pursue their academic journey. She added that the University remains equally committed to upholding academic standards and quality assurance requirements to strengthen educational outcomes and advance its institutional mission.
In a statement following the meeting, Acting Secretary-General and Official Spokesperson for Kuwait University, Prof. Thaqal Saad Al-Ajmi, said that the Council approved the renaming of the Department of Geography in the College of Social Sciences to the Department of Geography and Geographic Information Science, in line with academic and scientific developments in the field and with the aim of enhancing its educational and research outputs.
He added that the Council also approved the proposal to equate the SAT Mathscore with the University’s Academic Aptitude Test in Mathematics, contributing to the development of the admissions and academic assessment system and providing additional options for students in accordance with approved academic standards.
Prof. Al-Ajmi noted that the Council also approved the Memorandum of Understanding between Kuwait University and Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC), following the completion of the necessary legal and financial procedures. This comes within the framework of strengthening strategic partnerships with national institutions and expanding areas of cooperation in academic, research, and training fields.
He added that the Council also approved the promotion of 23 faculty members across various science, humanities, and social sciences colleges to the ranks of Professor and Associate Professor.
Prof. Al-Ajmi concluded his statement by affirming that the Kuwait University Council continues to follow up on the implementation of plans and decisions aimed at advancing the academic, administrative, and research systems, enhancing the quality of the University’s outputs, and reinforcing its national and societal role in line with its institutional strategy.
