With the Aim of Enhancing Their Geological Skills, Principles of Geology Students Take a Field Trip to Anjafah Beach

Students enrolled in the Principles of Geology course conducted a field trip to Anjafah Beach under the supervision of Dr. Ohood Al-Salem and Ms. Sharifah Al-Sowaidan from the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences. The trip aimed to study key geological features exposed in the rock outcrops, enabling students to apply theoretical knowledge in practice. This included distinguishing between sedimentary rock layers, identifying types of fossils preserved within the rocks, and examining cross-bedding structures, along with interpreting the processes that led to their formation.

The hands-on activities provided valuable learning opportunities, allowing students to understand how to interpret various geological features currently observed along the shoreline and to relate them to historical geological events that occurred millions of years ago in similar depositional environments.

Such field trips help students develop skills in interpreting and sequencing geological events in accordance with fundamental geological principles. They also enable students to identify and compare different sedimentary rocks, study the effects of weathering and erosion along the coastline, and use a compass to determine directions and measure the dip angles of rock layers. This practical training enhances students’ geological field skills, including the documentation of geological features and the preparation of geological maps—core competencies acquired by Earth and Environmental Sciences students at the College of Science throughout their academic journey.
