As Part of Its Social Responsibility
Kuwait University Launches Field Initiatives to Promote Health Awareness and Improve Health Literacy
As part of Kuwait University’s commitment to serving the community and enhancing public health awareness, seventh-year students from the Faculty of Dentistry at the Health Sciences Center carried out a field visit to the Kuwait Society for the Handicapped. The students were accompanied by the Acting Vice Dean for Academic and Student Affairs, Dr. Manal Abu Al-Melh, along with Dr. Jagan Baskaradoss, Dr. Iman Behbehani, and Dr. Maryam Al-Kheder.
During the visit, the students performed oral examinations for the society’s members and provided simplified guidance on oral hygiene, including hands-on training in brushing techniques and the use of dental floss. The visit was coordinated by Hanaa Baghdadi, Director of Community Affairs at the society, and supported by Dr. Fatma Al-Saraf, Consultant at the Special Care Unit at the Adan Specialized Dental Center.
In a related initiative, the College of Public Health, represented by the Department of Public Health Practice, participated in the “Healthy Steps” campaign launched by the Ministry of Health’s Department of Noncommunicable Disease Prevention and Control. The event was held at The Capital Mall, in the presence of the Assistant Undersecretary for Healthcare Affairs, Dr. Nadia Al-Jumaa, and in collaboration with the Public Authority for Sport.
Fatima AL-GHADBAN, faculty member in the department, explained that student participation coincided with the national project for raising awareness and improving health literacy regarding chronic diseases—part of the Fourth Development Plan (2025–2030). The initiative aims to promote physical activity and health consciousness in the community, and to spread a culture of healthy living through interactive activities and specialized nutritional and fitness consultations.
These two initiatives reflect the integrated efforts of Kuwait University’s colleges in advancing community health and quality of life through field training, preventive screenings, and evidence-based health education—supporting the state’s objectives of fostering active and healthy lifestyles for all.
