A delegation from the College of Science at Kuwait University, headed by Acting Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, Research, and Graduate Studies, Professor Suzanne Ahmad Al-Bustan, visited the headquarters of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The visit came upon an invitation from the Airport Safety Systems Unit under the Office of the Deputy Director General for Kuwait International Airport Affairs, Mr. Osama Zaid Al-Shawaf, and with the participation of Mr. Fathi Al-Shaib, an expert from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in airport operations.
The visit aimed to explore ways of cooperation between the DGCA and the College of Science to find scientific and peaceful solutions to the risks of bird strikes and wildlife control at Kuwait International Airport, which can result in human and material losses, including disruptions to aircraft takeoff and landing, as well as air traffic.
As part of this effort, a working group was formed comprising distinguished faculty members from the Department of Biological Sciences at the College of Science. The members include:
• Dr. Hassan Al-Haddad (Molecular Biology Program),
• Dr. Amani Al-Adsani (Director of the Biotechnology Center),
• Dr. Amani Al-Zaidan (specialist in environmental affairs and conservation of marine and terrestrial organisms – Animal Biology Program),
• Dr. Al-Jazi Al-Enezi (specialist in animal behavior – Animal Biology Program),
• Dr. Rawan Al-Edan (Animal Biology Program).
During the meeting, potential risks at Kuwait International Airport were discussed with the aim of developing fundamental solutions aligned with both international and local environmental laws. The parties also considered drafting an initial version of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the two sides. This MoU would outline a joint working mechanism and necessary communication channels, and its terms were approved.
The delegation also conducted a field visit to high-risk areas within Kuwait International Airport, accompanied by representatives from the Operations Department, Engineering Department, Air Navigation Department, Aviation Safety Department, and the Technical Office of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation.
